UNVEILED Eats: Fifty Two Rudding Park

Julia Smith

If dinner is theatre, then 52 Rudding Park, located just outide Harrogate, provides the full immersive experience. Don’t expect white tablecloths and hushed tones here; this is a place for the culinary curious, where food, atmosphere and Yorkshire spirit come together in a setting that feels genuinely special.

Leave this feature open where your other half can see it… perfect date night (or why not make it a mini break at Rudding Park Hotel and their stunning spa?) incoming!

At Fifty Two, the menu changes with the seasons and showcases local ingredients so fresh they may as well have been harvested seconds before arrival (and probably were)! Think asparagus pulled straight from the soil, tomatoes so sunny they could get a write-up in a Mediterranean travel guide, and herbs grown just a few steps away in their kitchen garden.

And speaking of the garden, it’s more than just for a quick wander before dessert. This is where the magic begins. On arrival, we strolled through rows of fragrant greenery, fancying ourselves as food foraging experts while a staff member politely refrained from rolling their eyes at our enthusiasm.

From kale to mint, everything grown here ends up on the plate or in the glass. Yes, they’re growing specific ingredients for their cocktails. It’s that kind of attention to detail, and we’re so here for it!

Back at the table, it wasn’t just the food that got the conversation flowing. Fifty Two Rudding Park has managed to turn small talk into an art form with its quirky conversation starter cards, tucked discreetly onto each table. Forget awkward silences; these little prompts had us debating everything from holiday playlists to which celeb we’d invite to dinner (Tom Hardy, obvs).

When it came to delivery, it felt as though we were watching a Great British Menu finale. The dishes that arrived from Chef Adam Degg and his team were as much about performance as they were about taste, with everything cooked in front of you in their open kitchen.

A flaky pastry pie filled with tender lamb and earthy wild garlic felt like a love letter to Yorkshire, while a dessert of rhubarb sorbet served on something that resembled edible modern art was so pretty it bordered on intimidating (we ate it anyway).

Then there were the cocktails. The gardener’s gin, infused with handpicked botanicals from that kitchen garden, tasted like summer in a glass, while a smoky old fashioned brought a dramatic flourish to the end of the evening.

What really sticks with you about Fifty Two Rudding Park is the sense of narrative. This isn’t just a meal; it’s an experience designed to make you pause. It’s like being nudged into the pages of a glossy magazine spread (waves!), with just enough grounding in reality to remind you that yes, this all happens in Yorkshire.

If you’re lucky enough to snag a reservation, don’t just go there to eat; go ready to be delighted. Leave time to explore the garden, bring a sense of curiosity, and maybe memorise your favorite conversation topic in advance. You’ll be glad you did.
